Description
A detailed, late 18th century map of the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and neighboring countries, covering the region from the north coast of South America up to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. The map shows numerous towns, keys, reefs, and shoals, and includes indications of the most common routes used by sailing vessels through the Gulf and the Caribbean Islands. The map also includes a note indicating Christopher Columbus' first landing in the new world in 1492 at present-day Cat Island in the Bahamas, though the exact location of the first landing is not known with certainty.
