A fascinating look at the layout of the western United States in the middle of the 19th century. The only state at that time was California, whose borders here match its present-day borders. The remaining territories shown on the map show how borders were in a state of change during the 19th century: New Mexico is shown as covering most of the present-day area of Arizona and New Mexico, Utah is shown as covering most of the present-day area of Nevada, Utah, and part of Colorado, Washington and Oregon are shown extending much farther east than they do today, while Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, and Montana are not shown at all. The map also shows numerous details, including: the names and locations of Native American tribes; geographical features such as mountain ranges, rivers, and lakes; and towns, forts, and trails (though these latter are not labelled).
