Description
An early map of the United States showing the states extending west only to about the Mississippi River. Beyond that four main territories are indicated: North West Territory (covering Minnesota and Wisconsin), Arkansas Territory (covering Arkansas and part of Oklahoma), Missouri Territory (covering the entire upper midwest from Kansas north to Canada), and Oregon Territory (covering the Pacific Northwest). The map contains a wealth of information about the country at that time, indicating the locations of cities, towns, rivers, and forts, as well as descriptive text in various places (some examples: "On the banks of the Illinois are abundance of wild grapes in 1769 the French planters made 170 hhs. of strong wine", and "Missouri Territory is a vast Wilderness, consisting chiefly of immence Plains, almost destitute of wood except in the neighborhood of Streams. It is traversed by numerous herds of Buffaloes and wild Horses, and by a few roving tribes of Indians"). The map also contains inset charts showing, among other things, the population of the states in 1820 and 1830, and a profile of the Erie Canal.
