Description
White's map is the first to focus only on the new colonies of Virginia. Oriented with north to the right, the coast from Cape Lookout, North Carolina to the Chesapeake Bay is shown. The large river extending up through the center of the map is present-day Albemarle Sound. This map is also the first to show the name Roanoke (as Roanoac), referring to Roanoke Island, location of the Roanoke Colony (aka, the Lost Colony), the first English colony in the new world.
